Almere has a lot to offer in terms of culture. Kunstlinie Almere Flevoland (formerly known as Theatre Almere) presents large musical productions, Dutch cabaret, and international stage plays. Arts centre Corrosia Theater, Expo & Film in Almere Haven also knows how to enthrall us with various theatre performances, films, and exhibitions. Theatre company Suburbia presents a fantastic outdoor performance every summer and, at Almere Beach (Almeerderzand) the performers from Vis a Vis have a really wonderful outdoor show.
Architecture in Almere
When it comes to architecture, Almere is listed as city no. 3 in The Netherlands – and actually as no. 1 when categorized under ‘modern architecture in European New Towns’. Almere offers high profile buildings by leading architects like Teun Koolhaas, Herman Hertzbergen, Rem Koolhaas, and Liesbeth van der Pol. There are several areas of natural beauty in and around Almere. Almeerderhout is Almere’s largest wooded area and actually consists of four different forests, each with its own ‘ambience’. Or visit the nature reserve Oostvaardersplassen to become acquainted with the ‘lowlands’ of thousands of years ago. The fact that Almere is built on land that was reclaimed from sea is unique in the Netherlands and in fact in the whole of Europe.
Almere is just a terrific town for outdoor lovers. Miles and miles of good walks, cycling routes, skate runs, sailing and more… It’s all possible. You will be amazed at the amount of greenery, woods, and parks, in and around the city. With the Gooimeer on one side and the IJmeer and Markermeer on the other, Almere is, practically speaking, paradise if you love being on the water. Traverse Almere via canals with a motor boat or a canoe. Check out the Noorderplassen in a motor launch or a dinghy, hire a canoe or a sailing boat or book yourself a tour of the waterways.
